Administrative Responsibilities

Module Co-ordinator   School Radiation Protection Supervisor   University Deputy Biological Safety Officer   School Disability Awareness Officer   Faculty Representative on Disability Forum   Chairperson of Student Support Committee.

Research Interests

Parasitology:  Molecular mechanisms leading to drug resistance in helminth parasites   Identification of new drug targets for the treatment of fascioliasis caused by the liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica   Genetic Diversity in F. hepatica populations.

Research Projects:

  • Characterisation of tubulin isotypes expressed in F. hepatica to determine if triclabendazole-resistance can be attributed to properties of these proteins or to changed expression levels of them
  • Molecular analysis of P-glycoprotein and glutathione S-transferase protein expression in triclabendazole - susceptible and triclabendazole - resistant F. hepatica
  • Identification of new drug targets associated with the cytoskeleton and proteins that bind to it.
  • Analysis of genetic diversity in F.hepatica populations to assess the impact of this on the development of drug resistance
