Research Interests

These are fairly wide and include the following:
  • Scaling of biodiversity and ecosystem processes
  • Common v. rare species ecology
  • Maintenance of biodiversity; optimal conservation planning
  • Machair Grassland ecology
  • The spatial ecology of species functional traits
  • Spatial analysis and statistics
  • Bayesian Network models applied to ecological interaction networks

My main research interests are spatial and temporal patterns in species distributions (single species), patterns in biodiversity (multiple species) and their causes.  In other words, understanding why a species is present here but not there and why some places have many species and some few.  Ultimately, this involves understanding how species interact with each other and how they are constrained by the environment they experience. Unravelling this is challenging, to say the least, but identifying and ultimately understanding how the processes involved operate is scientifically interesting and of great practical consequence for our coexistence with the natural world.
