Research Interests
The freshwater pearl mussel, Margaritifera margaritifera, is a globally endangered bivalve. This species is an important ecosystem engineer with the filtering capacity to alter turbidity patterns in rivers that determines light availability to macrophytes and associated organisms. M. margaritifera is also an important indicator species that reveals changes to the physico-chemical properties of rivers. I will be developing ex-situ conservation techniques, concentrating on the critical juvenile stage of mussels, with the aim of re-introducing pearl mussels back into the riverine habitats.
