Administrative Responsibilities

Co-ordinator for the MSc in Animal Behaviour and Welfare  Chair of School Research Committee  Chair School Postgraduate Research Committee.

Teaching

Level 3 Behavioural Ecology and MSc Animal Behaviour and Welfare.

Research Interests

Animal Behaviour and Behavioural Ecology: including information gathering and decision-making in various invertebrates and monkeys, reproductive tactics, life history tactics, mate guarding and aggression in spiders, hermit crabs and amphipods.  A key theme is to link functional and causal analyses, especially in decision-making during agonistic interactions.  Applied and fundamental work is conducted on crayfish, brent geese, lampreys and eels.  Recent interests involve the investigation of pain and stress in invertebrates.  Early interests include paternal and maternal care and the inhibition of infanticide.  Work funded by BBSRC and Department of Agriculture for Northern Ireland.

Former President of Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour  Current Treasurer of the International Council of Ethologists  2008 recipient of the ASAB medal and appointed Member of The Royal Irish Academy.
