Biochemistry

Biochemistry is the study of the organization and function of biological systems at the molecular level.  As a result, the subject underpins all areas of Biology: Animal, Plant and Microbial.  This includes Human Biology i.e. Medicine.  Thus Biochemistry is a component of all the degrees in the School, and a requirement for all Medical and Dental students as well as being a degree subject in its own right.

Biochemistry has a strong basis in Chemistry which is essential to its understanding.  The Biochemistry degree at Queen's gives a broad perspective of the subject which prepares students for careers in its more specialized aspects such as Clinical Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.

Career opportunities for Biochemistry graduates are available in a number of employment sectors including the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, teaching (Chemistry and/or Biology), hospitals (Clinical Biochemistry), the Scientific Civil Service, and research institutes.  Many graduates complete a higher degree (e.g. PhD. or MSc.) before embarking on full-time employment.  In some cases, the fact that the student has obtained a degree in Biochemistry has little relevance to the nature of the post to which they have been appointed.  Many employers are looking for graduates in any discipline, provided they show academic confidence, the ability to communicate, handle quantitative data and solve problems, and have good social skills, a wide range of interests and a record of success.  We believe that studying for a degree in the School of Biological Sciences at Queen's will enable you to acquire and develop these qualities.
