EDUCATIONAL AIMS
To provide graduate students with a knowledge and understanding of animal behaviour and welfare. This knowledge can be applied in future scientific research and in practical areas such as conservation, animal husbandry and zoo environments. The course will provide training in fundamentals of research, scientific literature & communication and biometrics.
COURSE ELEMENTS
Course includes elements such as:
Defining and recording animal behaviour
Behavioural development
Motivation
Pain, stress and welfare
Navigation
Welfare of farm animals
Applications of behavioural studies in conservation.
Welfare of animals in zoos
Behaviour and control of disease
Behaviour and control of disease vectors
Cognition and the theory of mind
Sensory systems, neurons and hormones
Physiological stress during courtship, migration and aggression.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
MSc: first degree at Honours 2:2 (50%) or above in relevant area of science or equivalent qualification.
Postgraduate diploma: first degree at Pass (40%) or above in relevant area of science or equivalent qualification.
For students whose first language is not English a demonstrable competence in English is required.
