Zoology is the study of the most complex of all living organisms, animals. It is consequently an intellectually challenging and practically demanding discipline involving a wide range of techniques and approaches. Research interests in Zoology can be grouped under the broad headings of: animal behaviour, brain function, parasitology, and the ecology and systematics of fish, birds and mammals and marine invertebrates.
On graduation, zoologists have a wide range of opportunities. A number continue to specialize by undertaking research towards higher degrees either here or overseas. Others find employment in medical, agricultural and environmental research. The remainder undertake further training in education, computing, administration and management developing their personal skills from a sound scientific background. The experience that you gain from applying the scientific approach to living organisms, solving numerical and practical problems, developing written and oral communication skills and using a wide range of sophisticated equipment will also help you to find employment in a variety of non-biological careers, such as public service administration, industrial management, accountancy and computing. Many employers are looking for graduates in any discipline, provided they show academic confidence, the ability to communicate, handle quantitative data and solve problems, and have good social skills, a wide range of interests and a record of success. We believe that studying for a degree in the School of Biological Sciences at Queen's will enable you to acquire and develop these qualities.
