Drama at Queen's combines history, theory and practice in an integrated, multi-disciplinary approach to discover why and how theatre works. Performance workshops and productions enable students to draw upon their reading of literary, cultural, historical and theoretical material to inform their practical understanding of performance. Students are also required to attend professional performances and benefit from our close links with the theatre sector in Northern Ireland and beyond.
Visiting professionals lead workshops in specialist areas including stage management , design and technical theatre, Shakespearean performance, voice, movement, Forum and Playback theatre, and over the years we have had many eminent professional artists visit our programme to teach and discuss their work with our students.
The Centre for Drama & Film Studies which opened in 2004 comprises the Brian Friel Theatre, a 120-seat courtyard style theatre, as well as a spacious rehearsal studio with facilities for dance and physical theatre, and dressing rooms, green room, technical control room and two cinemas.
Extra-curricular performance opportunities are offered by the Tyrone Guthrie Society and an active student drama society - the Queen’s Players. Student regularly take their work to national and international theatre festivals, including highly successful visits to Belgium, Italy, Scarborough and Sarajevo.
