Tyrone Guthrie Society

The Tyrone Guthrie Society was founded in 2000, the centenary of his birth, and this inaugural event featured a talk by Sir Peter Hall. There were three productions that year: (Julius Caesar, Testaments (a site-specific mystery cycle performed all over Queen’s  main campus ) and Svejk , in a version written by Colin Teevan, a then member of staff. Collectively these three productions helped to establish the society’s guiding principles: that the TGS would provide additional extra-mural production opportunities to enrich our student’s learning and to allow our staff to avail of a platform for research led practice.

 Subsequent productions have included:

 2001-2002: Brave New World directed by Ed Lewis which went to a student drama festival in Belgium

2002-2003: The stage premier of Seamus Heaney’s Beowulf which was included in the Belfast Festival ‘s main programme

2002-2003: Tis Pity She’s a Whore directed by Rachel O’Riordan

2003-2004: O What a Lovely War directed by Alison McCrudden as a co-production with BIFHE, now Belfast Metropolitan College  which was invited to a student drama festival in Italy

2004-2005: Offending the Audience which linked explicitly with the Level 1 core module in its treatment of performance theory

2005-2006: Our Country’s Good , directed by Des Kennedy
