BA (Single Honours) Film Studies
BA (Joint Honours) Drama & Film
BA (Joint Honours) English & Film
The undergraduate degrees in Film Studies at Queen's are established programmes which aim to introduce students to the widest possible experience of film culture. We offer a dynamic curriculum supported by world-class teaching and state-of-the-art facilities, all on the doorstep of a vibrant film, media and creative arts scene. The cinema is central to everything we do; leading filmmakers and scholars regularly give seminars and workshops here, while the majority of our classes and screenings take place at the onsite Queen's Film Theatre (QFT), which also plays host to the latest Art House and Independent film releases.
Our Single Honours programme is characterised by the integration of theory and practice, the latter delivered through modules in scriptwriting, editing, cinematography, direction, location filming and post-production sound. As a student of Film at Queen’s, you will have the opportunity to experience film culture in its widest sense: as a critic, scholar, and maker.
All of our programmes examine key debates in film history, theory and criticism.
Level 1 introduces basic Film Studies methods against the contexts of North American and European cinemas. The Single Honours programme offers an introductory module in film practice, a more specialised module on film editing, and two elective modules in closely related disciplines (chosen from an approved list).
Level 2 modules explore a range of national and world cinemas (Africa, Britain, France, Italy, Ireland, USA), central genres and film forms (documentary, the Western), and key movements and historical moments (French New Wave, New Hollywood, modernism). Additionally, Single Honours students take modules in cinematography, sound design, and screenwriting.
Level 3 offers the opportunity to examine more specialised areas of the field (film music; Third Cinema; experimental film); where appropriate, students may also complete a supervised dissertation around their individual interests. Single Honours students also develop their own creative film projects through advanced modules in film practice.
We have close contact with the local film industry (which has been experiencing significant growth in recent years), and we facilitate workshops and placements in the film and creative industries. Indeed, much of our film practice teaching is carried our by industry tutors drawn from the screen media professions.
Please note that practice components are only available to students on the BA Single Honours Film Studies programme.
