Research Degrees

Research lies at the heart of the activities in Music and Sonic Arts. It informs teaching, guides concert programming and seminars, and provides a context for many strategic activities within the School. The postgraduate community is one of the largest in the UK or Ireland (+ 50 students in 10/11) with students working on a range of musicological, creative and technical projects.

PhD in Musicology

The School offers PhD supervision in a wide range of fields. PhD in Composition

The PhD in Composition programme is part of the practice-led research activities which take place within the School. Student composers can work across a broad range of creative practice from acoustic composition through to creative work in sonic arts.  More

 

 

PhD in Ethnomusicology

PhD degrees in Ethnomusicology at Queen’s are offered in the School of History and Anthropology and the School of Creative Arts covering abroad spectrum of research areas such as: music in religion and ritual; music in politics; music and emotions; medical ethnomusicology; local musicking; popular music; and organology, among other topics.
