Interests

I have a strong interest in all aspects of the arts, and particularly in community-based arts. I regularly deliver workshops for local youth theatres, and was a member of the Board of Youth Action for more than 10 years, and the Ulster Association for Youth Drama for six years, being its first Chair in 2001.

I was a Board Member and Honorary treasurer for the major event Land of the Giants to be performed in Belfast in June 2012 as part of the Cultural Olympiad.

Other

Invited by the Peres Peace Institute to give drama workshops for Israeli and Palestinian school teachers, Jerusalem, October 2005

Research Statement

Having entered the Academy from a career in professional theatre practice, it was natural that my research should continue to be practice-led. In recent years I have established a particular profile in Applied Drama with work nationally and internationally in prisons, the health sector and with peace and reconciliation programmes. Notable international examples include Image Theatre workshops in Haifa and Sarajevo. To simplify the evidential difficulties of returning practice-as-research I have tended where possible to publish articles arising from my practice, but it is important to emphasise the main site of new knowledge continues to be in the practice itself - e.g. the prison play, Pipe Dreams which informed a peer-reviewed article in Performance Research (2012), the workshops with older people with dementia which informed a peer-reviewed article in the Journal of Applied Arts and Health (2011), and a full production of Translations by Brian Friel which informed a peer-reviewed article in Studies in Theatre and Performance (2011). I also continue to publish in more traditional historigraphical contexts.

Teaching

I have taught both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Applied Drama, Theory and Practice and Acting and Directing, Arts Management and Policy.
