MA in Arts Management
The School of Creative Arts is introducing a new MA, entitled MA in Arts Management. This pathway will take advantage of the strong existing links between Drama, Creative Writing, Film Studies, Music and Visual Arts courses and Belfast’s wider cultural sector. The course will thus be developed in co-operation with key cultural institutions within Northern Ireland with a strategic interest in the development of the arts and cultural sectors. An element of distinctiveness lies in the ability of Queen’s to provide students with in-house practical placements, capitalising on the University’s unique connections to the Festival at Queen’s, the Queen’s Film Theatre and the Naughton Gallery.
The MA will also provide a supportive environment for those students interested in new venture creation within the artistic and cultural spheres. It is also envisioned that this programme will be able to capitalise on Belfast’s burgeoning arts infrastructure.
2012-13 promises to be an exceptional year for the arts in this city with the Cultural Olympiad alongside the opening of the MAC, the new Lyric Theatre and Titanic Belfast, providing a fertile learning environment for the cultural leaders of the future. Belfast has further distinctiveness in the leading role that art and culture has played and continues to take in urban regeneration (Cathedral Quarter, Titanic Quarter) and post-conflict resolution.
The programme is suitable for a range of participants. Early and mid-career arts managers who wish to develop their practice and understanding of the background, theories and principles of arts and cultural management will find the course invaluable. It will also serve as a route for graduates who wish to pursue a career in arts or media management and will prepare those interested in creating their own cultural ventures for self-employment. The course is intended to be offered to both full- and part-time students.
The MA in Arts Management will provide four core modules and a dissertation. The modules will focus on contemporary issues of arts and cultural management. These are:
- Cultural Policy & Creative Industries
- Managing the Arts
- Engaging Audiences
- Placement / New Venturing
All modules will be connected by a common strategic thread: how to train future arts leaders against the backdrop of cultural, economic and political trends.
The programme includes a programme of guest lectures and/or practical seminars by experienced professionals who are based in arts institutions in Northern Ireland (e.g. The Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Audiences NI, Arts and Business, Creative and Cultural Skills).
Entrance Requirements
Normally a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent recognised qualification in a relevant subject. A 2.2 Honours degree or equivalent recognised qualification may be acceptable if a candidate can demonstrate relevant work experience as an artist or in the field of arts administration. Exceptionally, applicants who do not hold a 2.2 Honours degree and who possess relevant experience may be permitted the opportunity to demonstrate achievement at an equivalent level.
