Joanne Hughes was appointed to a Chair in the School of Education, QUB in July 2007. Her main research interests and areas of expertise are community relations and community development policy, inter-group contact theory, and the role of education in divided societies. She has published widely on these themes, with much of her work reflecting an international comparative focus. Current research projects include: an examination of identity in mixed and segregated urban and rural communities in Northern Ireland; an examination of inter-school collaboration in Northern Ireland and an exploration of the role of parents in bi-lingual/bi-national schools in Israel/Palestine and integrated schools in Northern Ireland. Professor Hughes has extensive experience of undertaking mixed method (qualitative and quantitative) evaluations of community based initiatives in Northern Ireland. She has also advised Government (local and National), NGOs and local community groups and organisations on good relations policy and practice.
