Dr Joanne McDowell was recently appointed as a Research Assistant in the Centre for Effective Education to work on the project Governance of Educational Trajectories in Europe (GOETE) which will analyse the role of schools across 8 EU countries in re-conceptualising education in terms of lifelong learning using a mixed method approach.
Joanne has a BA (Hons) in English and Social Anthropology and a MA in English Language and Linguistics, both obtained at the Queen’s University of Belfast. She has recently completed her PhD in Sociology and Linguistics (at the University of Ulster); her thesis focused on gender and discourse within the workplace. Before beginning her time at Queen’s, Joanne lectured at the University of Reading, where she secured various grants to further her research in Sociolinguistics and in May 2010 received the award Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Joanne has extensive experience of qualitative and quantitative data collection methods and has worked on numerous research projects including an attitudinal survey of the Ulster Scots variety across young people in Northern Ireland, an assessment of the support received by carers along the North/South border, and the examination of the effect of early intervention upon young children’s learning and development using randomized controlled trails (RCT) and case study analysis.
In her spare time, she is working on the publication of a monograph based on her PhD thesis, and several research papers.
