CPD Short Course Programme

Improving Knowledge, skills and performance

2009/10 Programme

We are pleased to present the 2009/10 session of short courses from our Training and Development programme. The wide variety of topics on offer aims to meet the training needs of staff, in the areas of management & leadership, business & organisation management, quality, process & engineering, communication and personal development. To date, over 14,650 participants from public, private, community and voluntary sector organisations have attended the 1,080 short courses that have run during the past forty years at the University.

The 2009/10 brochure is available for download in PDF.

The open courses are accessible to staff at all levels and are practical, enjoyable and competitively priced. They are delivered by experienced presenters and practitioners in their field. The content is both practical and relevant, and the courses are designed to help delegates apply the knowledge and skills learnt, back in the workplace. Since delegate numbers on each course are restricted, to ensure individual attention and effective practical sessions, early booking is always advised.

All existing courses can be delivered in-house and customised where required. New courses can also be developed to meet an organisation’s specific business needs and training requirements.

Certificate in Business Management

Although all open courses are stand-alone events, they can also be used to work towards the University Certificate in Business Management. This provides a framework for recognition of achievement for those (from the public, private, community and voluntary sectors) who attend short course training and subsequently complete work-based assignments. Not a formal course of study in the traditional sense, this flexible ‘part-time’ certificate is designed for candidates to work towards the qualification by acquiring and accumulating credits from a range of optional short courses related to business and management. CE Marking Programme (Invest NI)

CE Marking on a product is a declaration that the product complies with the essential requirements of the relevant European health, safety and environmental protection legislation. It is also a requirement for exporting into the European Union. For the majority of companies, CE marking is a self-certification process, although a small percentage may require assessment and product testing by a Notified Body. An Invest NI programme takes companies through the complete process of CE marking a product, or group of products, using engineering consultants with considerable experience in this field. The programme focuses on the Machinery, Low Voltage (LV) and Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directives. Click here for further details:

City & Guilds Senior Awards

City & Guilds Senior Awards offer a progressive employment-based route to higher level qualifications. They provide distinctive and formal recognition of personal achievement and the application of professional and technical knowledge in the public services, industry and commerce - through a combination of education, training & employment.

They are available in all sectors and across the full range of employment areas and are accessible to any candidate who meets the criteria. Each level demands rigorous standards of assessment and demonstrates that the holder has proven skills and abilities. They require evidence of practical knowledge and ability through assessment of a portfolio of evidence and a formal presentation. Most of the evidence in a portfolio consists largely of the report which, depending on the route taken, is based on the process of continuous professional development or on a specific work-based project.
