Thesis Title: Citizenship Education in Northern Ireland and Israel within a Right to Education Framework

Summary of Research: This study takes a right to education approach to citizenship education, a curricular subject that is especially controversial in societies divided along ethnic, religious or socio-political lines. Through qualitative interviews and focus groups, it explores the varying interpretations made by citizenship education policy-makers, teachers and students of international obligations with respect to educational rights. This particular framework has yet to be applied in literature relating to citizenship education in the divided societies of Northern Ireland and Israel, and it is hoped it will offer a fresh way of conceptualising both the subject’s development and its practice.
