Name: Jill
Course: Doctorate in Education (EdD)
Why did you choose to study for the EdD? The EdD was appealing to me because it incorporated taught modules as well as a dissertation. The modules cover a wide range of areas and there is plenty of choice and I liked the idea of having some taught input, particularly in research, before I would begin my dissertation. I had already completed an MEd at the School of Education which I enjoyed and it whetted my appetite for more!
What have you found most interesting or useful about the course so far? I have particularly enjoyed attending the taught sessions as the range of people doing the EdD modules is quite diverse. Tutors taking the module are all experts in their field and there are lots of opportunities for discussion and sharing perspectives.
Has the course enhanced your existing knowledge? Most modules allow you to pick your own perspective on the assignment which makes it a valuable opportunity to tailor the assignment to your own particular area. Hence, whilst researching and writing a module you are both completing the requirements for the module and learning new, relevant and interesting issues important for your own field of interest.
What is your experience of the teaching support and student facilities at Queen’s? All tutors have been experts in their field and hence are thoroughly up-to-date with module material and are supportive during the taught session and in the writing up phase of the assignment. Feedback has also been useful in developing and honing the approach to and writing of assignments.
Has the course helped you in your career so far? I work as a lecturer in teacher education so it is important to be up to date with educational research and I have been able to apply knowledge gained from modules in research to research projects that I have been involved in.
What do you plan on doing after the course? Celebrate completing the course (and surviving it!) and then work towards publishing papers from my dissertation.
Any advice to future students? Choose modules that you will be interested in and have an idea of what you want to do for your dissertation. You can begin to develop these ideas through the module assignments and this gives you a head start into the dissertation.
Would you recommend the Doctorate in Education? I would strongly recommend the EdD as it has been a well structured course so far with plenty of support and guidance available along the way. It is a great way of developing your expertise in specific areas of educational research and developing your professional profile.
