I chose the EdD over a more traditional PhD for two reasons. Firstly, as a practitioner, I wanted to make sure that my learning and my day job would be as joined up as possible and for me, the modular taught approach with a broad range of choices,  combined with a dissertation, the theme of which could be decided upon towards the end of that process, met this need. Secondly,  I was drawn to a form of study which allowed me to be with a cohort of other people all taking part together in a three year programme of taught units, during which time I would be a part of a real rather than a virtual learning community. I would recommend the EdD for other practitioners who wish to pursue a form of post graduate study at doctorate level which combines learning through a range of taught modules with an opportunity to carry out the more traditional academic research as well. The modules within the EdD programme have provided me with a great opportunity to engage in discussions with a wide range of professionals working within the education sector. I have found the teaching elements of the modules to be highly interactive and informal (and even enjoyable!) with an excellent balance of teaching and discussion.  The assignment titles are sufficiently flexible to allow me to apply the learning from the modules to my own particular areas of interest so that that I can gain maximum benefit from my study. I started the EdD nervously after 12 years away from formal study but was delighted to find the School of Education staff more than helpful.  The modules are expertly and seamlessly delivered.  Follow up support with assignments is prompt and advice is specific.  I am a nurse teacher and immediately found theory translating into practice in my work. I know I'm a better teacher now because of the EdD.
