Information for Postgraduate Dissertation & Doctoral Theses Students

The School of Education Ethics Committee has developed a Proforma to be completed by all students before undertaking such research.  When completed, the form should be submitted to the Ethics Secretary, School of Education, Room 0G 018, 20 College Green for approval by the Committee.

Please note the following:

  • Please download the form and guidance notes here and submit 3 signed copies to the Ethics Secretary, School of Education, Room 0G 018, 20 College Green.
  • Students should note the cut-off dates for submission of completed forms to the Committee (2011/12: 14th October; 2nd December; 17th February; and 11th May). Forms received after these dates will be held until the next submission deadline.
  • Students will be notified of the outcome via their Queen’s email account (we aim to have the outcomes back within four weeks of the deadline, except in special circumstances when further advice is needed.  Please note that if you submit your form in the December deadline it is likely that you will hear from us in early January).
  • It is the student’s responsibility to address any ethical issues, complete the form, sign it and submit three  signed copies, including three copies of any attachments, to the School of Education Research Office. Students also need to acquire their supervisor’s signature on the form.
  • Students should be aware that some research requires Ethical Approval from outside agencies. Students are advised to discuss this procedure with their supervisor(s).
  • Research may only commence after it has been approved by the School of Education’s Ethics Committee. Please note that if your research has not received formal approval from the Ethics Committee it will not normally be possible for the School of Education to accept and process it for your award.
  • Please note that it is the responsibility of the supervisor to add any research projects involving human participants, material or data to the University’s Human Subjects Database for insurance purposes.  (The Human Subjects Database is accessible through QOL under ‘My Research’.)
