PGCE Student Profile - Claire

Name: Claire
Course: PGCE

Why did you choose to study for the PGCE at Queen’s? Having completed my Undergraduate Degree at Queens, I was excited to continue my studies at Queens as it was the only local University that offered a PGCE in Politics.

What have you found most interesting or useful about the course so far? I have had such an amazing time during my PGCE so far. It’s been a real challenge and a lot of hard work but rewarding at the same time. I have developed new skills and teaching methods, and have been able to put these into practice on placement. I have really enjoyed getting to know my fellow students on the course and I know that the friendships I have made over the past year will last a lifetime.

Has the course enhanced your existing knowledge? When initially starting my PGCE I felt I knew a lot about teaching, however, through the expert teaching and workshops available I soon realized I knew quite little! The PGCE  has taught me that teaching in a classroom has developed from what I was used to in Secondary School.

What is your experience of the teaching support and student facilities at Queen’s? I think the teaching support available in Queens for the PGCE is fabulous. My tutors and lecturers are always available to give me help and advice and the resources available online are extensive. The new library and the School of Education’s library have computer and study facilities which are open at all times of the day and night…..especially vital for that last minute essay deadline!

Any advice to future students? The PGCE will be a lot of hard work and you’ll never want to see another lesson plan as long as you live but it will be one of the quickest, most fulfilling and exciting years of your life, so make the most of it and enjoy it!

Would you recommend the PGCE to prospective students? Yes.  The teaching, facilities and craic which are on offer will make it one of the most exciting and enjoyable years of your life!
