Autism Spectrum Disorders (MSc)

This course, which has been developed in consultation with Principals of Special Schools and individuals with expertise within this specialist field, is designed to facilitate the professional development of Teachers and other related professionals who work, or wish to work, in this area.   

Aims - The aim is to enable the study of the theory and practice underpinning this specialist area, in order to enhance understanding and ability to engage in research- and evidence-based practice.

We understand the many demands on your time so we've made it easy to study for a Masters module as a short course*. Classes are in the evening, at the weekend or online.  We'll store your results, just in case you want to work towards a qualification such as the Advanced Certificate in Education (60 credits) or the Diploma of Advanced Study in Education (DASE, 120 credits).

*if you complete only one module you will earn a Certificate of Attendance.

Cats: 180 credit points at M level
Part time: up to 5 years
Full time: 1 calendar year (normally September to September)
Fees: Part-time (normally 60 Credits per year for 3 years):  £21.78 per credit point but fees change on an annual basis 
Full-time (180 Credits), whole course fee: £3,920
Fees quoted are for Home/ EU students 

International Students should refer to the Universities Student Income and Finance Office for further information on fees.

The award requires the study of either:

  • three core modules, a research methods module and a Masters dissertation, or
  • four core modules, a research methods module (audited) and a Masters dissertation, or
  • three core modules and one other module from the modular Masters programme and a Masters dissertation.

The ASD core modules are:

Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorders 30 M Points 
Behaviour Analysis in Practice (also available as online course) 30 M points
Autism Spectrum Disorder: Models and Methods of Intervention  30 M Points 
Behaviour Analysis in Theory (online) 30 M Points 

 

Full details of modules can be found in the M-level Book of Modules. The MSc/MEd are awarded to those students who have accumulated 180 M Points (including a dissertation equivalent to 60 M points).

On completion of the option students will have:

  • developed a breadth of knowledge and understanding of the special needs of children, young people and adults within the specialist area;
  • shown evidence of critical reflection on their professional practice and be able to apply relevant research literature to both personal and professional experience;
  • acquired a range of specialised practical skills which will enhance their ability to support pupils and students in a variety of settings;
  • developed teamwork skills required to work in partnership, supporting and advising other colleagues.

Students can study within the modular postgraduate programme even if they do not feel able to commit to the full MEd or MSc, with the following 'exit points'.

Advanced Certificate in Education 60 credits at level 7/M
Diploma in Advanced Study in Education (DASE)  120 credits at level 7/M

Desirable Entrance Requirements - Applicants for the MSc in Autism Spectrum Disorders should preferably:

  • have one year of relevant professional experience,
  • have access to a professionally relevant working environment.
