Autism Spectrum Disorders (MSc)

This course has been developed in consultation with Principals of Special Schools and individuals with expertise within this specialist field.  It is designed to facilitate the professional development of Teachers and other related professionals who work, or wish to work, in this area.   

Aims - The aim is to enable the study of the theory and practice underpinning this specialist area, in order to enhance understanding and ability to engage in research- and evidence-based practice.

Study our Masters Modules as Short Courses

We understand the many demands on your time so we've made it easy to study for a Masters module as a short course*. Classes are in the evening, at the weekend or online.  We'll store your results, just in case you want to work towards a qualification such as the Advanced Certificate in Education (60 credits) or the Diploma of Advanced Study in Education (DASE, 120 credits).

*if you complete only one module you will earn a Certificate of Attendance.

Closing date: 31 May 2014 (for September 2014 entry)
Cats: 180 credit points at M level
Part time: 3 - 5 years
Full time: 1 calendar year (normally September to September: taught modules September to May/ June; Dissertation submission mid-September)
Fees: Part-time (normally 60 credits per year for 3 years) 2013/14: £24.44 per credit point.  Fees change on an annual basis.
Full-time (180 credits), whole course fee, 2013/14: £4,400
Fees quoted are for Home/ EU students

The award requires the study of either:

  • three core modules, research methods module (with assessment) and a dissertation, or
  • four core modules, research methods module (non-assessed) and a dissertation, or
  • three core modules and one from another Masters programme plus research methods (non-asessed) and a dissertation

The ASD core modules are:

Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorders 30 CATS 
Behaviour Analysis in Practice (also available as online course) 30 CATS
Autism Spectrum Disorder: Models and Methods of Intervention  30 CATS 
Behaviour Analysis in Theory (online) 30 CATS

On completion of the option students will have:

  • developed a breadth of knowledge and understanding of the special needs of children, young people and adults within the specialist area;
  • shown evidence of critical reflection on their professional practice and be able to apply relevant research literature to both personal and professional experience;
  • acquired a range of specialised practical skills which will enhance their ability to support pupils and students in a variety of settings;
  • developed teamwork skills required to work in partnership, supporting and advising other colleagues.

Desirable Entrance Requirements - Applicants for the MSc in Autism Spectrum Disorders should preferably:

  • have one year of relevant professional experience,
  • have access to a professionally relevant working environment.
