Student Stories Autumn

Effective Speaking - I am amongst those who lack confidence in communication and the skill required especially in presenting works in class.  Hence, I decided to take one step ahead to join the ‘Effective Speaking’ course to overcome my weaknesses. Although this is the first time studying with the Open Learning programme, I am very impressed by the course structure.  The learning outcomes include technical theory such as planning speeches as well as practical skills for debates.  I have no doubt on the teaching ability of the vastly experienced educator, Helen Torr.  She knows how to polish and maximise our hidden potential.  My routine has changed 360 degrees - I am now more optimistic and have more faith in myself to be able to creative a conducive atmosphere between speaker and audiences.

French Language - Having had to travel a lot with my career in the past, I am now gladly in a position where I have more 'down time' and I have therefore been able to return to a subject I really enjoy i.e. French.  The reason I'm doing this course is because I studied French at school but regretfully had to drop it in favour of other subjects that were more suited to my career path.
Homework is handed out, but it's not obligatory, and therefore unlike school or college days there is no pressure.  For me, it's the enjoyment of the language that counts along with the gradual but increasing confidence to go forth and speak on a more fluent basis.  Also, the Open Learning programme whether you work or not, gives various options for either day or evening classes which helps greatly in fitting in with your occupation.  I have now progressed to second year in 'Open Learning'.  It's fun.  I've met like minded people from many and varied backgrounds who have a liking and rapport for the language.  Also, from a family perspective, we have spent and hope to spend a lot of time on holidays in France, so upgrading my French will help me greatly (I hope!).  Our tutor, Maryvonne Le Roy, is patience itself!  She is vivacious, enthusiastic and encouraging. bringing the language to life with her enthusiasm.  I never expected to enjoy the course so much, but I am. I would encourage others to go for it! You have nothing to lose and all to gain.

Italian Language Club - I chose ‘Italian Language Club because the participants have been studying together for several years and have mutual interests and similar backgrounds.  We are mainly former teachers.  We enjoy the friendly atmosphere fostered by Maura Favretto who entertains and stimulates us with her varied choice of topics.  I have attended Open Learning since I retired from teaching in 1992 after being ill.  My daughter is married to a Sicilian.  They live and work in Milan.  The course keeps my mind active and is a good discipline.  Our tutor has an excellent sense of humour and is fair and encouraging in her comments on the essays we produce during the term.
