About the English Society

The English Society at Queen's University Belfast is a student led society for students throughout Queen's University and beyond who have an interest in World Literature.  We organise readings, quizzes and other events for members and non-members.  In the traditions of great writers coming from Queen's University, the Society is dedicated to the development of creative writing across all levels of Queen's University life, from undergraduates to postgraduates and beyond.  The Society has established an Undergraduate Writers' Forum as an initiative to start to develop undergraduate creative written work.  The Society is one of the largest non-sporting, non-political societies at Queen's and one of the most active.

Visitors to the English Society over the past ten years have included Ciaran Carson, Cairns Craig, Robert Crawford, Robert Creeley, Seamus Deane, Denis Donoghue, Ian Duhig, Carol Anne Duffy, James Fenton, Mark Ford, Allen Ginsberg, Alasdair Gray, Kerrie Hardie, Seamus Heaney, Galway Kinnell, Kenneth Koch, Doris Lessing, Medbh McGuckian, John Montague, Chris Morash, Andrew Motion, Paul Muldoon, Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, Camille Paglia, Jo Shapcott, Alan Sinfield, Jon Stallworthy, Graham Swift, Sinead Morrissey, Ian Sansom and many others.

If you would like to be put on the Society mailing list to be keep up to date on events or to find out how to join the Society feel free to e-mail engsoc@qub.ac.uk.

The Writers' Forum

The Writers' Forum has been set up to facilitate undergraduates who are interested in creative writing.  It meets weekly for an hour in the seminar room of the Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry, at 4 pm on Mondays.  Access to the Seamus Heaney Centre is through Building 2 of the School of English.  Ask at Reception if you are unsure of directions.  The Forum was set up for writers to get constructive feedback on their own work in a friendly environment.  Those wishing to have work discussed should e-mail it to engsoc@qub.ac.uk several days before a meeting.

Poetry and Pints

A monthly event currently held in Whites Tavern, one of Belfast's oldest bars located at 3-4 Winecellar Entry, High Street, in Belfast City Centre.  These events are a chance for local writers to read their own work or have their work read for them.  They cover works of Poetry, Prose and Dramatic pieces.  All readers are welcome, contact engsoc@qub.ac.uk if you wish to read at one of these events.
