The School of English is committed to reducing its carbon footprint within the University as much as possible. This year the School won a Silver Award for our efforts through the Green Impact Scheme, run throughout the University. We would like to maintain our efforts and improve sufficiently to gain a Gold Award at the next opportunity.
Students and staff members are asked to keep lighting to a minimum, turning off lights when leaving their lit areas, wherever possible. (One exception is that the lights in the Social Space – back of 1 University Square, ground floor - are automatic.) You will notice that posters and stickers are used as reminders. To minimalize heating costs, we try to keep radiators kept at a minimal level. We ask that photocopying and printing be kept to a minimum and both sides of paper used where possible. Printer cartridges are all recycled. Information and module packs etc are added to Queens Online for downloading instead of printing.
Recycling bins in the Social Space provide a means to recycle paper and envelopes. All paper for recycling is collected by a waste disposal company on a weekly basis. Cans, glass and plastic bottles should be left in the appropriate bins in the Social Space or outside the kitchen of 3 University Square (ground floor return) There is a box in the School Office for used stamps.
Recycling books! Please recycle your books by leaving them on the bookshelves in the Social Space. You can also add details of books for sale on the noticeboard beside the bookshelves. Periodically we have book sales and book swopping events – please watch this space for further details.
