Staff and students of the School of English convey their condolences to the family of Seamus Heaney, who has died aged 74. A former student of and lecturer in the School, and patron of the Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry, Heaney's stature can be measured by the global reaction to his passing. As Heaney Centre director Professor Ciaran Carson has put it, "Seamus Heaney's death will leave a void in all our lives. But his words have become part of our lives, and he endures in them. There is no poet in Ireland who has not been influenced by his example, and is in his debt; but so is everyone who has been touched by his poetry, and they are innumerable."
