Bringing Early Modern Literature and Linguistics Together

Due to the unprecedented number of proposals received, we are pleased to be able to extend the conference to include Sunday morning. The conference will now run from 14 - 16 November, finishing on Sunday at approximately 2pm.

Professor Barbara Dancygier (University of British Columbia). Title: tbc.
The conference aims to showcase the complex interrelationship between language and literature in the Early Modern period (1500-1700). Research in this historical juncture is generally segregated, favouring either a linguistic or literary approach. This conference aims to redress the balance by devoting equal scholarly attention to what has traditionally been conceived as two distinct disciplines. To that end, we welcome papers that include but are not limited to the following themes:
- Stylistic analyses of literary texts
- Translation
- Speech/Silence as Action
- Iconic Language
- Linguistic Ambiguity
- Language as power
- Multi-modality
- Metaphor
- Types of texts
- Exegesis
Papers will be 20 mins in length. If you are interested in presenting a paper, please complete the accompanying registration form by 31st July 2008 and forward to Ruth Abraham and Patricia Canning at:
We are pleased to be able to offer 2 international postgraduate student bursaries to the value of £300 each. We would ask interested students to submit a brief paragraph (via email) outlining their current research interests in addition to the registration form by 31st July 2008. All successful applicants will be notified after the abstract submission deadline.
