School Research Committee

The role of the Research Committee is to work as a discussion forum for generating ideas and initiatives amongst heads of research, to report to the School Management Board, and to inform the School about research opportunities and directions.

The Committee acts to:

·         guide research activity in the School;
·         identify funding opportunities;
·         oversee and offer advice on grant applications,
·         consider the research aspect of study leave applications and make recommendations to School Management Board;
·         consider conference/research travel fund applications;
·         manage preparations for the Research Excellence Framework (REF), which replaces the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). It is an exercise, organised by the funding councils, to determine the quality of the research carried out in academic departments in the UK, and to distribute funding for Quality Research (QR) accordingly.

Membership: 

The academic membership comprises:

·         The Head of School
·         The two Directors of Research who lead the two research clusters in the School (Renaissance, English Language and Medieval Studies; and Poetry, Irish Writing, Creative Writing and Modern Literary Studies);
·         Two Lecturers (one from each research cluster)
·         One Senior Lecturer/Reader
·         One Professor (who will act as Chair)
·         One Director of Postgraduate Education
.         The Director of Assistant Director of the Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry

The School Manager is in attendance.
