Research Statement

Primarily, my research interests focus on late-medieval English literature, especially Geoffrey Chaucer and John Gower. I am particularly interested in the ways in which medieval writers appropriate older texts, manipulating their cultural past for poetical and political purposes in their immediate present. A further question that I pursue in my research queries our position as post-medieval, twenty-first-century readers of medieval texts and the usability and validity of poststructuralist theories for our understanding of he medieval past in the present. This dual concern constitutes the main focus of my first book, Fragments: Past and Present in Chaucer and Gower . I have edited a collection of essays on John Gower ( John Gower: Manuscript, Reader, Contexts ), a review of which can be found here .

Currently, I am working on a monograph on examining the construction and importance of textual subjectivities in Chaucer, provisionally entitled Walking with Chaucer. In addition, I am working on a British Academy funded project (Crowdsourcing John Gower's Confessio Amantis), which is exploring the feasibility of creating a crowdsourced transcription of all available manuscripts of Gower's late 14th-century poem. Find the project website here, subscribe to the project's RSS feed here, or follow the project on Twitter here . This project is planned to lead to a larger project producing a complete electronic edition of Gower's poem.
