History is a thriving subject at Queen's at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and we are a leading centre for historical teaching and research.
Our teaching staff include authorities on a wide range of historical periods and subjects, from the ancient world to the twentieth century including African, American and continental European history, and with particular strengths in the histories of Ireland and Britain and in the history of religion. The Research Assessment Exercises of 2001 and 2008 demonstrated that a high proportion of our research was of national and international excellence, and this is reflected in the research-led teaching that is a characteristic of our programmes. The 2011 and 2012 QS World University Rankings placed History at Queen's in the top 100 departments globally.
The School is committed to delivering teaching of the highest quality. A review of our teaching, conducted in 2002 by two leading specialists from outside the university, praised 'the evident enthusiasm of students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, for the learning experience they are receiving ... the teaching is fully informed by recent scholarship, and students are made aware of the methods and principles by which the professional historian works.' Information on our undergraduate (BA) and postgraduate (MA and PhD) programmes is available in the Prospective Students section of this website.
History at Queen's includes around thirty teaching staff, over seventy postgraduates and around 400 undergraduates. The department is diverse and stimulating, without being overly large - it has a reputation for being friendly and supportive. Our SchoolVideos section feature students and staff talking about studying history at Queen's and include lectures on American history. We have a lively postgraduate student community, with PhD students engaged in research into a wide range of historical topics. The School hosts many research seminars, conferences and lectures, including the annual highlight of the Wiles lecture series.
From 2012 undergraduate entry the previously separate programmes in Ancient and Modern History will be merged into an integrated History Programme, with ancient history continuing to play a central part in the research and teaching activities of the School.
