Module Convenor : Dr Jonathan Skinner
Lecture Time: to be confirmed, venue to be arranged.
This module explores when, where, how, and why ‘modern’ people dance. Students will examine the nature and context of twentieth century dance - from ballet to hip hop and contemporary dance, from trance to rave and rock ‘n’ roll, capoeira to ballroom and swing, tango to salsa and jive. Special topics covered include the following: modern dance expression and meaning; modernity and dance identity, subcultures and communities; modern dance performance; modern dance as embodied knowledge; dance evolution and diffusion; and gender and the natural and cyborg body in dance. In taking this module, students should acquire an understanding of the diverse types, roles and functions of modern dance in society; and they should acquire an understanding of anthropological theory with reference to modern dance.
