ESA2009 Popular Music and Culture

This course introduces students to the study of popular musics, focusing upon the contribution ethnomusicology can make to this area of research. The topic covered include: definitions of 'the popular', theories of mass culture, youth and subcultures, pleasure, ethnographies of popular music-making, popular music in comparative perspective. In particular, the course explores popular music around the world, from the Beatles, juju, mbalax, zouk to Yothu Yindi. Through these examples, the course addresses such questions as: What are the politics of pop? Is popular music a youth expression? What about the audiences for popular sounds?
