‘Professional musicians in Athens: hybrid identities and globalised imaginaries’


This research, looking at a large scale urban environment –the city of Athens– and drawing on contemporary theoretical discussions on globalisation, cosmopolitanism and modernity is attempting to describe music-making according to an understanding of global-local inter-connectivity. Concentrating on the identity of professional musicians working in the Athenian popular and jazz music scene(s), will reveal how this identity is formed within a complex web of actions and imaginaries, drawing on both local and global reservoirs of cultural knowledge.

Research interests:

Ioannis is primarily interested in urban music cultures and the impact of globality on local music scenes and networks. His research area is the Greek mainland.
