Research topic:
Environmental Understanding: exploring ways of knowing the world in Barranquitas, Venezuela.

A phenomenological approach frames the analysis of the relationship between the people in the village of Barranquitas, Venezuela, and their environment. The environment is taken to be all that surrounds, necessitating an inclusion of the day-to-day life in the village in any examination, as this forms the basic part of the way in which people know the world in which they live. Focusing on interactions and experiences becomes central in comprehending how the environment is understood and known. The thesis examines livelihoods, sense of place and belonging, ideas of wilderness, how people live together (convivilaity), and movement - all in relation to its impact and connection to the environment.  Rather than providing a simple outline of what environment means for the people of Barranquitas, the thesis shows the intricacy of how people come to know the world and how this is part of their understanding of the environment.
