Research Topic:  “The role and effect of violence on the Ulster Defence Regiment in South Armagh”.
This research shall examine the role and effect of violence as a result of the ‘Troubles’ on the Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR) in South Armagh.   Placing violence in the centre of the lives of those exposed to it, and by focusing on the subjective, experiential realities of conflict, this will be reflected through the experience of former members’ who served in the regiment.   However, I will advocate a multidimensional approach to studying violence by incorporating historical, structural and operational factors along with its processual character.   Finally I will illustrate how the study of violence must be approached in a manner which reveals its multilayered element by examining violent imaginaries and social memory, the power of conflict, its gendered connotations, the culture of military life and the fetishization of violence.  Such an approach will exemplify the impact of violence on human social life.
