Research Topic and Interests

‘Jewish identity and community in Belfast, 1916-53’.

My research will look at events and developments that took place within the Belfast Jewish community during the ministries of Rabbi Isaac Herzog and Rabbi Jacob Shachter, considering how Jewish identity was expressed and developed during these decades. Given the acute religious and political polarisation of Belfast civilians in this period, the study will consider if the experience of the Jewish community in Belfast differed from that of other British Jewish communities.

In September 2012 I organised a one-day symposium at QUB on 'Jewish Community, Identity and Memory: Perspectives from Belfast'.
