Law has been studied and taught at Queen's since 1845. The years since have seen many changes and challenges for lawyers in Belfast. Legal and political developments have drawn a great deal of interest to law throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland, as well as to the distinctive aspects of the Northern Irish legal system.
The School of Law received an impressive top-ten ranking in RAE 2008, finishing 7th in the UK, with a weighted average score of 2.80. The results show that 95% of research in the School is of international quality and above (4*, 3* and 2*), with 60% of research rated as world-leading or internationally excellent (3* and 4*).
