The Budget
Analysis Team launched their report on social housing ‘Budgeting for Social
Housing in Northern Ireland: A Human Rights Analysis’ in The Great Hall at QUB.
The event was attended by a range of civil society, public sector and other
representatives. The event featured speeches from Alex Attwood MLA, Alyson
Kilpatrick BL, Commissioner
on the Future of Housing in Northern Ireland
and Dr Padraic Quirk from Atlantic Philanthropies.
Media interest included a
television interview with Dr Rory O’Connell (approx 11 minutes in) and a newspaper report.

Aoife Nolan and Rory O'Connell were interviewed by the BBC for the Newsnight Scotland programme. The interview concerned the relevance of economic and social rights in the context of pressures on public finances.
14-15 November 2009
The Project Team organised a major International Conference on November 14-15 in QUB. The Conference brought more than a dozen international experts on budget work to Belfast to discuss different aspects of their work. The conference was well attended with 60-70 in the audience, who included members of civil society organisations, some public sector organisations, academics and students. As part of the November Conference two members of the project team, Mira Dutschke and Eoin Rooney presented papers based on the Project’s work. Budget Work and Economic and Social Rights – an International Perspective Seminar. The seminar was chaired by Professor Colin Harvey with speakers: Ann Blyberg (Executive Director, International Human Rights Internship Program), Professor Diane Elson (University of Essex), Sally-Anne Way (Acting Research Director, Centre for Economic and Social Rights), and Martin Sigal (Director, Civil Association for Equality and Justice, Argentina). The seminar was well attended by representatives of local civil society organisations and public bodies.
