Postgraduate Research

     | Institute of Governance

Current Postgraduate Students
The Institute has a lively community of postgraduate students undertaking research in a wide variety of fields.

Prospective Postgraduate Students
The Institute of Governance, Public Policy and Social Research welcomes applications for postgraduate study. At present we offer only postgraduate research degrees (MPhil/PhD), which are awarded for a piece of original research work:

An MPhil (Master of Philosophy) will normally take 2 years and involve a thesis of around 50,000 words; A PhD (doctorate) normally takes three years and requires a thesis of approximately 80,000 words.

Both require the student to display advanced critical skills and subject knowledge; for a PhD, the thesis must also make an original contribution to knowledge (as is the case in all UK universities). We also run a taught Doctorate of Governance (D Gov) aimed primarily at the practitioner community.

Research at the Institute has local, national, pan-European and global dimensions. We are seeking to bring together both fundamental (or normative) and empirical (or applied) research which serves the needs of both practitioner and academic communities at any or all of these levels. Thus, we are keen to receive applications for research with implications for public policy and/or the management of public life.

We are a multi-disciplinary Institute and encourage applications from students with backgrounds in political science, law, European Studies and sociology, our contributing units within the University. Applications from students with other backgrounds will also be considered if the proposed subject falls within the Institute's research agenda.

Research students at the Institute are deeply integrated into an active research culture, in which they play a full part. This allows them not only to produce excellent work, but also to hone valuable skills such as academic presenting and participation in the running of an academic institution (via the Student-Staff Consultative Committee). We also try to create a supportive social environment in order to make students' time at the Institute as enjoyable as possible.
