New Discoveries Explored by ARC Researcher

20/10/2016

Dr Kate Maguire, along with international colleagues, has run a successful workshop on the Physics of Supernovae in Munich.

Dr Maguire, of the Astrophysics Research Centre (ARC), teamed up with collaborators from the US and Europe to offer a Munich Institute for Astro- and Particle Physics (MIAPP) Programme on supernovae this September.

Supernovae are among the most immensely energetic events in the universe, but recent theoretical and technical advances have produced unexpected new discoveries.

The four-week programme aimed at understanding how stars explode, and covered events from very faint and short lived transients that last only a few days to rare, exceptionally bright ‘superluminous’ supernovae.

The workshop was “very successful”, according to Dr Maguire. “We were able to bring the latest theoretical insights and new observations together, and lay groundwork for future surveys”.
