My primary research interests are in studying comets and asteroids in our Solar system. These studies are generally based on observations performed on the UK supported telescopes in Australia (AAT), the Canary Islands (ING), Hawaii (Gemini) and Chile (Gemini, ESO). Since 2004 I have been a member of the ESA Near-Earth Object MIssion Advisory Panel, and in 2006 and 2007 I served on the Solar system panel for the ESA/NASA Hubble Space telescope Time Allocation Committee. In 2002-2005 I was a member of Council of the Royal Astronomical Society. I served on the PPARC fellowships panel and chaired the PPARC Aurora fellowships panel in 2006/2007. Since 2007 I have been a member of the Isaac Newton Group Board. Last and possibly least, asteroid (4985) Fitzsimmons was kindly named in my honour; one day I'll take a spectrum of it...
