QSIS registration process for 2012-2013

Modules in the School of Modern Languages

 

VERY IMPORTANT – ENROLMENT FOR ALL YOUR MODULES AND CLASSES MUST BE COMPLETED IN SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER

 

Below is important information for students completing QSIS enrolment for French, Spanish and Irish core language modules. Please follow the guidance given in order to select classes for these modules.

 

Please note also below details of introductory meetings for these modules in Week 1 of Semester (these times may vary from normal teaching hours for these modules and may not be visible on your QSIS timetable for week 1)

You may find that as you choose classes you create timetable clashes; please refer to the QSIS Enrolment and Registration Guide for details of how to resolve any clashes. If you are having problems, make a note of your clashes and contact the relevant subject secretary above. QSIS clinics and meetings with Advisors of Studies in Welcome Week will also be an opportunity to resolve any problems.

 

FRH1001 and FRH1002 (post A Level entry FRENCH students)                                          

 

Each of these modules has 4 hours of class per week. You will need to enrol for classes as follows:

 

  • Français Pratique 1(FP1) & Français Pratique 2 (FP2) – these are shown on QSIS as SM classes and are 2 separate hours per week.  Choose one class from the 7 on offer – please note 2 separate times will appear on your timetable; one for FP1 & one for FP2 and you must be available to attend both times relating to your SM choice.
  • Français Pratique 3 (oral class) – these are shown on QSIS as LC classes.  Choose one class from the 11 on offer
  • All students (apart from those taking Law with French) undertake an introduction to French business skills known as Le Français des Affaires.  This is shown on QSIS as TT – please choose one class from the choice of TT01 – TT06 only.
  • Students taking Law with French – you take a class known as Le Français Juridique.  This is shown on QSIS as TT07 – you must enrol on this class only.

 

ALL students of Level 1 French are required to attend the Introductory Session for the FRH1001/1011 and FRH1002/1012 modules on Monday 24 September @ 9am in 6 University Square/G05.

 

 

FRH1011 and FRH1012 (post AS Level entry FRENCH students only)

 

If you are registering for the modules FHR1011 (French Language A) & FRH1012 (French Language B), please follow the steps outlined below. Each of these modules has 4 hours of class per week. Note that if you have taken French to A level, you should not enrol on these modules, but take FRH1001 and FRH1002

 

You will need to enrol for classes as follows:

  • Français Pratique 1(FP1) & Français Pratique 2 (FP2) – these are shown on QSIS as SM classes and are 2 separate hours per week.  Choose the class SM01 – please note 2 separate times will appear on your timetable; one for FP1 & one for FP2
  • Français Pratique 3 (oral class) – these are shown on QSIS as LC classes.  Choose the class LC01.
  • All students undertake an introduction to French business skills known as Le Français des Affaires.  This is shown on QSIS as TT – please choose the class TT01.
    • There is an additional class for post AS level entry students which will not appear on your timetable.  Please make a note of the following times: Semester One & Two – Tuesdays @ 12noon (room to be confirmed)

 

ALL students of Level 1 French are required to attend the Introductory Session for the FRH1001/1011 and FRH1002/1012 modules on Monday 24 September @ 9am in 6 University Square/G05.

 

CEL1001 and CEL1002 (post A Level Irish)

 

Each of these modules has 3 hours of class per week. You will need to enrol for classes as follows:

 

  • Lecture – this is shown on QSIS as SM01 and ALL students must enroll for this class.
  • Language Lab – these are shown on QSIS as CC classes.  Students must choose from one of the two classes available.

 

ALL students of Level 1 Irish are required to attend the Opening Lecture on Monday 26 September @ 1pm in Peter Froggatt Centre /02/011.

 

SPA1001 and SPA1002 (post A level entry SPANISH students)

 

Each of these modules has 4 hours of class per week. You will need to enrol for classes as follows:

 

  1. for a tutorial (TUT) Español para el mundo de trabajo – all students should choose from tutorials numbered 1-4 EXCEPT STUDENTS ON THE LAW WITH SPANISH PATHWAY, WHO MUST ENROL FOR TUTORIAL No 5

 

  1. for an oral class (OP) – choose one class from the 8 on offer

 

  1. for a seminar class  (SEM) – choose one class from the 4 on offer

 

  1. For SPA1001 there is also a language workshop, which is the 4th hour of Spanish per week.  You will see that you are registered for a ‘virtual’ workshop class with no times listed.  Your registration for the ‘virtual workshop’ will remain in QSIS and you will sign up for these classes manually, on a notice which will be posted outside the office in 8 University Square during week 1 of the semester.  This will also apply to SPA1002 Language Lab class.  You will see that you are enrolled for a ‘virtual computer-based class’.  This enrolment will sit in QSIS and you will sign up manually in February. NOTE THAT THE TIMES FOR THESE CLASSES WILL NOT APPEAR ON YOUR QSIS TIMETABLE

 

Students on SPA1001/1002 will attend their TUTORIAL hour in week 1. Please make a note of the time and place for this class; it should be visible on your QSIS timetable for week 1.

 

SPA1021 and SPA1022 (Beginner’s Spanish)

 

NB TO REGISTER FOR THESE MODULES YOU MUST HAVE A PROVEN LINGUISTIC ABILITY, e.g.  GRADE B IN A LANGUAGE AT GCSE

 

Each of these modules has 4 hours of class per week. You will need to enrol for classes as follows:

 

  1. for a tutorial class (TUT) – choose one class from the 2 on offer

 

  1. for an oral class (OP) – choose one class from the 3 on offer

 

  1. for a seminar class  (SEM) – choose one class from the 2 on offer.  NOTE THAT THE SEMINARS EACH HAVE 2 HOURS PER WEEK. YOU MUST BE AVAILABLE TO ATTEND BOTH HOURS RELATING TO A SEMINAR

 

Students on SPA1021/1022 will attend their TUTORIAL hour in week 1. Please make a note of the time and place for this class; it should be visible on your QSIS timetable for week 1.

 

 

SPA1011 (Intermediate Spanish 1) and SPA1012 (Intermediate Spanish 2) (Post AS level)
