Interpreting

Welcome to Interpreting at Queen’s   

We offer a broad-based programme in the theory and practice of interpreting that is designed both to equip students with the skills necessary to work at the highest professional levels.

Many of our past graduates, with whom we maintain contact via LinkedIn and Facebook, are now working as professional interpreters, translators, and language consultants in both the public and private sector.

In broad terms, the MA in Interpreting offers:

  • a comprehensive range of practical and theoretical modules, giving students exposure to various contexts and modes of interpreting (including commercial, legal, and medical settings)
  • intensive interpreting practice in Queen’s University state of the art language lab
  • work experience and business tuition (including the Certificate in Entrepreneurial Skills)
  • tuition in online tools and translation technologies
  • a weekly programme of visiting speakers, featuring some of the best-known academics and practitioners in the world
  • a pathway to doctoral study 

The programme includes the following modules:

  • Principles and Practices of Interpreting (semester 1)
  • Research Contexts (semester 1)
  • Public Service Interpreting: Legal and Medical Settings (semester 2)
  • Commercial Interpreting (semester 2)
  • Dissertation

Depending on the demand, in 2013-2014 the programme will be offered in the following language pairs: Mandarin-English, Portuguese-English, Lithuanian-English, Russian-English, and BSL-English.
