To aquaint students with modern translation theory and linguistic theory, to encourage them to develop a critical analytical linguistic response to issues and problems arising in translation, and to focus their attention on major contrastive phenomena between Irish and English.

CEL7042 Language Specifics: register, dialect, law, culture

Learning outcomes
To familiarise students with issues of register and dialect, to aquaint them with issues arising in the translation of legal texts, and to enable them to understand the importance of cultural issues in translation.

CEL7043 Literary Translation: different genres

To advance students’ knowledge of Modern Irish language and sociolinguistic usage, to enable them to deal with problems of literary translation, and to develop their awareness of the differences between various genres.

Literary translation; the role of register and cultural issues; translation of drama and voice media; children’s language and literature.

CEL7044 Translation and Communication

Learning outcomes
To develop students’ skill in editorial translation work, and to introduce them to general guidelines in the style and register of language involved in translations for the general public.

Content
Communicative translation skills, chiefly language for signage, tourism and heritage, and including advertising and marketing.
