Marcas Mac Coinnigh is a native of Omagh, Co. Tyrone, and a graduate of the University of Ulster (BA 1999, PhD 2004). He joined the staff of Irish and Celtic Studies in 2007, having previously held the Vera Furness Research Fellowship at the University of Ulster (2003-2006) and an IRCHSS Post-doctoral Fellowship in the Department of Modern Irish, University College Cork (2006-7).
His principal research interests lie in the fields of Irish phraseology and paremiology, folklore studies and bilingual lexicography. At QUB he teaches courses on Irish language and literature, Irish folklore studies, and Irish translation studies.
In 2010-11 he was the Senior Fulbright Irish Language Scholar in the Department of Irish Language and Literature at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, where he conducted research on A Dictionary of Proverbial Expressions in Modern Irish.
