French Studies

Welcome to French Studies

 French Handbook 2011-2012

French Studies at Queen's offers a very broad range of courses at degree level. Central to our programme is the development of high-level communicative language skills in French, as well as the study of French and Francophone culture and society through such media as literature, film and painting.

The courses offered in French Studies provide a sound grammatical basis to the language as well as a broadly communicative type of language tuition which looks at specific language situations, and inculcates specific linguistic skills. From a strong research base, the full-time members of staff in French Studies also offer a range of optional modules at Level 2 and Level 3 in French linguistics, literature, and culture/civilization.

Language and textual teaching is in small groups (language and grammar groups, seminars, oral classes) where it is easier for students to be able to express themselves freely, for a tutor to get to know students and give help individually.

French can be studied on a Single, Major, Minor or Joint pathway on the B.A., and as part of certain Integrated pathways [Law with French, Accountancy with French, International Business with French, Science with Extended Studies in Europe etc].  Further details are available in the University Prospectus at Queen's and in our prospective students section.
