Why study French at QUB?
Our emphasis in French Studies at QUB is on linguistic competence, intercultural awareness and oral fluency. In addition to our intensive language programme, you will be able choose from a wide range of specialist options (linguistics, literature, cinema, word and image studies, postcolonial studies), and we work closely with the Language Centre to ensure that more traditional approaches are complemented by state-of-the-art language-learning facilities. For students interested in degrees with Law, Accountancy and International Business, we offer fully integrated programmes, with specialist language provision from first year.
Languages graduates are among the most employable of all graduates across the board, and the skills acquired in a French degree at QUB are flexible and marketable. Recent graduates have gone on to work in the media (print, TV and radio), in local government, in business, sales and marketing, in education and in European law.
The student experience
French Studies at Queen’s is a friendly and informal department. We pride ourselves on the quality of the student experience, and on the attention given to each and every student. Tuition is mostly in small groups (around 12-15 students), and we have a strong pastoral care network, through personal tutor schemes and year co-ordinators. As a student of French you will have ample opportunity to socialise with other students in the Department and with staff, and annual events organised by the French Society include wine and cheese evenings, cinema trips, pub quizzes and, of course, the annual formal.
Applying for a Degree in French
French is available as a BA Single Honours Programme, and also as a Major, Joint and Minor Honours subject. It can be combined with a very wide range of Humanities and Social Sciences subjects (see the UCAS handbook/UG Prospectus for a full list of possible combinations). The SWESE programme allows for French to be combined with a number of science subjects (e.g. Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Geography), and there are fully integrated pathways, with tailor-made language provision at all levels, with Law, Accounting, and International Business.
