Undergraduates

Level 1
Two pathways are offered at Level 1, depending on entrance qualifications:

  • Post AS-Level French (entrance requirement - Grade B in AS Level French);
  • Post A-Level French (entrance requirement - Grade C in A Level French).

In both these pathways our aim is to ensure a smooth and manageable transition from your sixth-form studies in French.  Language work focuses on consolidating grammatical accuracy, extending your range of expression, developing translation skills and enhancing oral profficiency.  In Addition, law with French students follow a specialist course in Legal French, while all other students take a course in Business French.  In optional modules you will also be introduced to the study of linguistics, literature, works of art and film, through which you will improve your knowledge of the French-speaking world, as well as developing your analytical and reading skills.  Joint  Honours students take one optional module and Single Honours students take two.

Level 2
Level 3
All students take two compulsory modules at both Level 2 and Level 3.  These focus on the development of a range of advanced linguistic skills, such as translation and creative writing, as well as high-level oral competence.  Within each of these compulsory modules, students are also offered a choice of filière - these 'mini modules', which are taught and assessed in French, explore aspects of the artistic, cultural and linguistic richness of France and the French-speaking world.  Business, Law and Management students follow specialist language filières.

Outside the compulsory course, and subject to their degree programme, students are free to pursue their own interests by choosing from a wide range of optional modules.

Residence Abroad
For all students of French, a period of residence abroad is compulsory.  For most students, this will normally involve a year spent in France, which, with the exception of combinations requiring study at a French university (Law, European Studies), is spent working in France, either on a work placement (Management and International Business students) or as an English-Language assistant in a French primary or secondary school.  The assistantship provides valuable professional experience, and students have the option of validating this by taking a work-based learning qualification while abroad (the City and Guilds Licentiateship).  Those who choose to go abroad as assistants also have the possibility of enrolling for a TEFL qualification through Queen's.
