Clinical Allocations

Clinical Allocations

The Clinical Allocations Unit is responsible for allocating you to the various clinical placement areas.  Students are on placement for half of the course - 18 months out of the 3 years.

The placements are designed to provide meaningful experience in relation to the courses being studied and ensure theory and practice are intrinsically linked.  Both the number and length of placements vary according to the course you decide to study, but in general the placements are between four and six weeks in duration, and can be in a wide range of settings.  These could include:

  • Hospital based, such as medical or surgical wards, intranatal or postnatal wards, Out-Patients Department or Accident and Emergency Unit.
  • Community based, with a district nurse, health visitor, community psychiatric nurse, community learning disability nurse or community midwife.
  • Non-hospital locations such as resource censures, special schools or nursing homes.

Adult - all clinical placements will be arranged in the Belfast, Southern and South Eastern Health and Social Care Trusts.  However during Placement 2, adult nursing students undertaking a learning disability or mental health placement may be placed anywhere in Northern Ireland.  You may also have a placement in a Nursing Home and this too may take place anywhere in Northern Ireland.

Mental Health - clinical placements are throughout Northern Ireland and students must be prepared to travel or stay in nursing accommodation.

Learning Disability - clinical placements are throughout Northern Ireland and students must be prepared to travel or stay in nursing accommodation.

Children's and Advanced Standing (Children's) - clinical placements are throughout Northern Ireland and students must be prepared to travel or stay in accommodation.

Midwifery - students are attached to a particular Trust within Northern Ireland.  The majority of placements will take place within that Trust.
