Introduction to the module

Content

This module will provide students with the knowledge and skills to support quality service delivery and will address performance management and advanced decision making. Concepts covered within the module will include: concepts of quality, risk management and leadership; clinical governance for health and social wellbeing services; user, carer and public perspectives; budgeting and financial management. People, physical resource and HSC environment management; project management; ethical and legal accountability.

 

Learning outcomes

On completion of the module students will be able to:

Critically apply the knowledge and skills of project management to health and social wellbeing services.

Critically review the role of users, carers, public, HSC personnel and policy makers in delivering quality health and social services.

Critically and systematically understand governance (with emphasis on clinical governance) and risk management with application to health and social wellbeing contexts.

Critically appraise and apply the principles and practices of HSC environment, financial, people and physical resource performance management to health and social wellbeing settings.

Critically examine the theory of advanced leadership and management decision making including consideration of ethical theories and legislation within health and social wellbeing contexts

 

Proposed Assignment

Project Management (chart/outline 1000 words)

Proposal for a project to enhance local service quality or safety (3000 words)

 

Skills 

Knowledge and Understanding Skills

Demonstrate and develop critical and advanced knowledge and understanding of principal theories, principles, concepts and research related to leadership and management for health and social wellbeing.

Cognitive Skills

Apply a constant and integrated approach to analysis, evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas, information and issues so as to make informed judgements regarding leadership and management for health and social wellbeing. 

Transferable Skills

Demonstrate and ability to engage in critical debate and communicate clearly and at an advanced level, with an ability to utilise a wide range of resources to support advanced decision making. Deal with complex professional issues in ways that demonstrate reflective, self-critical, autonomous and evidence based performance.
